It depends how ill they are at the time IME.
When my Dad had his stroke recently, it took the advice of another doctor to alert him to the seriousness of his condition just before he was hospitalised. (further details available upoin request).

I had a diagnosis of a mini stroke foisted upon me including a next day appoinrment at the neuro sciences dept of the Western General in Edinburgh.
I had a consultation with a professor in waiting, various scans and a prescription for some heavy duty drugs. Turned out some weeks later that I was slap bang in the middle of a mid-life crisis and a charming trainee psychologist cured me with a CD and a booklet.

I suppose what I'm suggesting is that they should seek a second (possibly third) opinion.

Starbuck.....No, it is not illegal for doctors to treat members of their own family.

I have done it all my life and if I get out of my depth then a colleague Consultant will offer a second opinion.

Some doctors take the view that they are too emotionally involved with their own families to *** the situation in an unbiased manner and look to their colleagues for health care of their families.

Didnt bother me though as I could switch my emotion on and off.
