Pretty sure I have tonsillitis. Last week thought I was getting my husband's man-flu, but throat got worse and I noticed white 'lumps' on my tonsils, they disappeared after a couple of days so I thought I'd get better, instead I've gotten worse! My throat is so bad I can barely swallow and ear ache keeps me awake at night. I feel pretty awful. Can someone tell me how long this usually lasts? It started last Wednesday.
Thanks
Gillian

Why dont you have them out ?
If i'm not mistaken i believe you need antibiotics for Tonsillitis - Dr used to give them to be before they took them out.....
I used to suffer from tonsillitis every winter when I was a child and I always had to take antbiotics. I was threatened with surgery at age 22 and, funnily enough, never had it again.
The last time I had tonsillitis it dragged on for more than a week before I gave in and went to get some antibiotics. I`d go to the doc`s if I was you.
tiger I agree with you about the Bah Humbug x

"Why dont you have them out ?"
I'm over 50...think it's a little late for that smurf.
Thought if it was caused by cold virus then antibiotics wouldn't help.
The tonsilitis is a secondary infection so it would respond to antibiotics. I`d go to the GP - there`s no point in suffering.
I take Echinacea drops from Boots when I have a problem with my throat usually clears it straight away. We all need a little help now and again.
I think it will take more than echinacea to clear that up. You may end up with an ear infection as well as you have earache.

Looks like it's the doctors. thanks for your replies
You either have tonsillitis or if it is one sided. you may have a quinsy.
The earache is referred pain for the inflamed tonsil.
Take Ibuprufen 600mgs if y0u can swallow it and see your GP in the morning.
