I've had a problem with broken nails for many years now and I've never know why they are caused and if there is anything I can do to stop them from splitting. It used to just occur on my thumb nails but now its happening on my forefingers. I try to cut and file them regularly but they still break. The worst thing about it is that they catch on my clothes and cause snags here there and everywhere.

Anyone know how to combat this please. Currently I have 3 splits down one side of my thumb.

Thanks

I shall be watching this post tiggerblue 10 as I have exactly the same problem and it currently is only affecting my thumb nails but they look awful..have tried everything. I am thinking it may be something to do with my age :-(

Hi Tilly, I don't think its anything to do with age. I've been cursed with it since my 20's.

Will do. Should have thought of that myself. Doh!
will take a bit of time but if you put some olive oil in a bowl and then the bowl into another bowl of warm water the soak your nails in the oil for a little while then rub in. This will add moisture to your nails but as I say will take a bit of time while new nail grows. Also dont be too harsh when filing and file in one direction. Pink Ladies link was for nail strengthener.
Broken flaking nails USED to be ther bane of my life too. Simple solution, discovered accidentally, was to paint my nails daily with tea tree oil. I'm sure any oil would do, but tea tree seems to be the most pleasant one to use.
Please post again to let us know how you get on.

I seem to be having real trouble getting onto the Boots website. I'll try later.

I did try the Sally Hansen stuff but it didn't do anything. I'll have a go with the olive oil and tea tree oil.

Thank you all :o)
just be patient - give everything a bit of time!

I have the same problem...peeling(due to having my hands in water, and using industrial cleaners at work)...and splitting. I keep chopping and changing products...my nails will grow-then the split takes over, and I am filing my nails down VERY short.
This has so far worked the best... http://www.amazon.co....olution/dp/B001BACCN6

I even put it on over polish between coats.

when my daughter worked at an eventing yard she used to put cornucrescine hoof cream on the neddy's feet and her nail were like steel talons. (it's about £8/9 for a tub that will last you years)
Hi pastafreak and carmalee - where can I get these products I have just had to cut all of my nails again today because the thumb nails are splitting
Hi grannygrump - try any horsey shop -it's an over the counter product or try googling it for your nearest stockist - think I've spelled it correctly but if you have a prob will keep checking this thread to see if I can help further.
Thank you carmalee
Hi granny...when I posted the link above last night-I discovered that the Sally Hansen product is discontinued ....but if you google it-Sally Hansen 'Get Growing',quite a few online suppliers come up.
I found a link for carmalee's solution...... http://www.equestrian...and_creams/index.html
