If sleep is supposed to help the body restore itself and heal itself, how come when I get a cold or bad throat it develops in the night and I wake up with it? I never develop anything like that during the day, only at night.

i find I develop things during the day.
237SJ...;-)

At this very moment, there are many theories about the function of sleep, but nobody really knows the exact function of the pattern of sleep.

There seem little evidence to support your comment that it helps the body to restore and heal itself.

Maybe it`s just me then. Even when I`m working at night I can feel fine, then I have a break and sleep for an hour and can wake up with a bug.
Sgad i remember being told that the cell renewal rate was faster during sleep than when awake?
woofgang.....which cells?

Sqad, if nothing has been proved about restorative benefits of sleep, does that mean that the theories about the damage to the body by lack of sleep are unproven too?
It kind of confirms it here but i agree the link with the immune system is unclear

woofgang - beauty sleep? I`m getting to the age where I look bl00dy rough in the morning :)
Sleep deprivation..........starts with a healthy person.......and then one investigates the adverse effects and then assumes that the adverse effects are indeed due to sleep deprivation, which it usually does.

Restoration benefits of sleep is a different matter and one starts with an unhealthy person and one would have to exclude all medication to assess the effects of sleep alone and that would be ethically unacceptable.
woofgang,,,the first link was not an established organisation that I had ever heard of and gave no references of any research of any kind.

The second link was interesting but came to no conclusions.
I try to sleep myself better, in conjunction with appropriate medication.
I fully accept that being asleep throughout an illness probably lessens the perceived affects of the illness.
I think that we do develop lurgies throughout the day but there are so many distractions that we often fail to recognise the signs, or we can explain it away through that days events......
affects !!?!
I meant, of course, effects.............

Hmmm...all interesting, but still doesn`t explain why I always "wake up with something".
As I said, it must be just me.
237SJ,,,it could be worse......you could wake up with me;-)
It knits up the raveled sleeve of care, the death of each days life, sore labour's bath, balm of hurt minds, great natures second course, chief nourisher in lifes feast...
I like my kip.
