Purely out of interest - if I have an MRI scan for one condition would another undiagnosed condition be picked up - thank you

what i actually meant was it depends on where it is and whether it's something thsat could be picked up by mri. For example, i had an MRI of my hip, which also showed a completely unrelated abdominal lesion

As it is an image of your 'insides' you would expect so.

However, I suppose it depends which sort of specialist is scrutinising your slides.

If the other condition is in the same area as the scan area then it should be - providing the condtion is one that can be seen through the magnet and not one that needs radiation to show up... A radiologist will report the scan so they take a much wider view of what they're looking at. Your specialist MAY also review the images but they generally focus on reading the reports.... Just on a positive note remember when you're 'in' think of the lovely 6wks abroad youre about to have. (Just as an aside -my BIL was seconded to Pretoria as part of a peace keeping force (Ltt Col) and him and my SIL have just bought the most marvelous old colonial mansion to renovate and theyre 'rooting' themselves there -woop SA here we come !! :))

Lou Lou thanks a million for that very detailed answer and the Good Lucks - am a bit of a wooz when it comes to being confined but am determined not to let the claustrophobia win and will focus on good thoughts and the benefits of the proceedure.
Dris - Have a couple of nights in Joburg (same as Pretoria now - almost one big city) so get your butt over there girl and we'll have a sundowner!

Carmalee - your welcome. If you're scared of being closed in and have insurance / can afford it its worth going private and finding somewhere with a 'wide boar' scanner.

The 'whole' your in is bigger so its less confined. Also check the scanner is open at both ends..... if you can see out it will help!!! I'm sure you'll be fine!

Lou Lou - have just put phone down from a friend who rang about a totally unrelated topic and when I mention my forthcoming scan she said that her husband was also down to have one but is so claustrophobic he just couldn't do it - anyway she told me about the 'open mri scan' option which sounds similar to what you are suggesting - will be on the internet to check - thanks again for the interest.

I've had mine reused for checking.

I had an mri on my head for my ears and neurology used it a couple of years later to check for any MS lesions or anything like that when I started getting some dodgy symptoms (probably caused by the menieres/wierd deficiencies from a malabsorption condition I'd imagine going on later diagnoses). I'd have hoped they'd have noticed any on the initial scan though!

I had an MRI a few months ago (brain scan) I was in the chamber about 20 mins. I found if I kept my eyes shut the whole time and did quizzes in my head the time goes by so much quicker.A- Z of Films and A- Z of Songs, Boys names Girls names.
It really works. In fact you'll find you're not finished searching when they tell you over the mike "ALL DONE"

I was just feeling quite worried about my granddaughter when I saw this thread. She is almost 16 and has cluster headaches quite badly. She has to go for an MRI scan on Friday she has been taking Ibroprufen for the headaces, which I am told is not good for the stomach.
