I am left handed and for a while now I have had a pain in the base of my thumb, the thick fleshy bit. The pain has been getting worse. After gardening last week the pain has been terrible and now I cannot move the thumb or use my hand without the pain shooting through my thumb. couldnt even hold my brush this morning. Anyone else got or had the same problem.?

Nothing sinister comes to mind.
Almost certainly muscular in origin.
Ibuprofen 600mgs three times a day should settle it down.

Many thanks for your replies.
Sqad I have taken ibuprofen like you said but I suffer from GERDs and have a Hiatus hernia. Ibuprofen has given me awful heartburn today. Is there anything else you could think of that I could take for the same problem. Many thanks
lilac....that is tough. There are other NSAID'S available, but they might also give the same problem. I suppose that we are left with Paracetamol.

Ok sqad thankyou again. will try paracetamols tonight instead. I hate having to take pain killers but think needs must at the moment. Have tried resting it by putting it under my index finger into the palm of my hand. Lets hope it will not take too long to go away.
Why not try a tube of Algesal Analgesic Cream from your GP or ask your local pharmacist for advise?
