Same as you would in word. One way is to use the 'insert symbol' facility. Think it's on windings
You can always copy and paste this, although there is a better one on windings
That would be 'Wingdings' then.
That's the one. Bit of a weird name really. Must have had webdings in my mind
I assume you mean you would like users of your spreadsheet to be able to 'tick' using the computer, not by pen/pencil on a print out?

The best way is to go to View, Toolbars, 'Forms Toolbar'.
Then select the tick box, draw it on your spreadsheet and it should work.

Only problem I have found for this is lining up numerous boxes so it looks neat...

Are we all talking windows vista here because I am having trouble making my computer do some of the things suggested! I have found wingdings but when I cut and paste, a different symbol appears. Is there a formula I can put on a column so I get a tick for true and a cross for false???
No, plain standard XP with Excel 1997. You should be able to use the tick box option I suggested? It puts text next to it, but you can edit and delete this...also gives the option of a circle that can be selected etc. No need for wingdings or webdings...

Three stars for tamborine's answer. Oh I can do these as well now ☎☑
But.....if it is a live form that is wanting to be created, you can't select and tick a wingdings type!
