Maybe Burn aware doesn't support DVD writing?
The first thing the program does is asks you what kind of media you are trying to create.
Did you elect "Create DVD Video"?
You do need to actually run the BurnAware program - you can't just drag and drop files onto the DVD, If you do, the Windows burning routines will be invoked, and Windows can't write DVDs.

Not the case.

it doesn't matter if you burn an AVI file to a CD or a DVD, in this case the only difference is the physical capacity.

If your AVI is under 700MB then it can be burned to a CD with no problems
