My 3 year old Westie is constantly washing his paws........the sound is disgusting.
Because of this his feet and around his mouth are coloured browny/peach and the dog groomer told me this was due to his saliva content and suggested I changed his food.
He has now been on his new food for 6 months but with no improvement whatsoever........any ideas as to why the constant foot washing?

Hi, I have 2 westies and di some research on this a while back, Westies have Red yeast in there saliva and this is what turns there fur red/brown, It is natural in there body and there is a supplement that you can get to raise the ph levels but as far as i know it is still only available in the usa, Little white bichons have red yeast around there eyes and that is why they go reddish/brown tear drops.. ithe supplement is something called Angel eyes its menat to work from the dog inside out.

Do you use "shake and vac" on your carpets? Our dog used to chew his paws until they were red raw until we realised that the "shake and vac" was making his feet itch.

thanks for the suggestion Graham.............I don't have any carpets in my house.....
sounds like an irritaton between the claws.....sometime its grass-seed splinters; if the skin is red. Bathe paws in salt water and dust with mite powder.
Hi
Does he get walked enough, or did he get walked enough before you got him?

Constant repetative characteristics such as constant licking can be a sign of boredom, he may have got into this habit before you got him as a result of lack of stimulation/exercise and may be carrying it on now that you have him?
