My friends are replacing their bath and have offered me their old one to grow veges. in.(In the garden - of course)! I realise there is a plug hole, but will I need to bore more holes? Also would potatoes, carrots and onions grow in such a strange container?

beejay1124 - I think you are a non-gardener like me, but I really am trying to be serious and try out this vegetable growing stuff. Thank you for making me smile anyway!
I grow carrots in an old butler sink--so your bath will be the same, just bigger ;o)
Oh and I didn't make more holes, just took the plug out!
ok deanna-- no i grow veg -on a small scale
grow veg in containers smaller than a bath
take the plug out of the bath-- to allow drainage put gravel along the bottom of the bath-water will drain out the plug hole-make sure the bath is steady and secure(egput building blocks at each corner-fill with soil /compost or mixture(include some slow release fertilizer)- get your seeds and start growing-tho not as much choice at this time of year
try -spring onions/leeks /carrots-would give cabbage , cauli etc a miss as they take uo too much room
i use window boxes to grow spring onions/radish/carrot-sit them on grond on on shelving
remember to feed veg regularly with fertilizer when growing in containers-

What a great containetr. I would make extra holes in the bottom for waster to run out of in very rainy weather . all the crops wil grow that you mentioned . Fill with good quality soil and compost mixed , some fertilizerand awawy you go . would put bricksunder to raise it up a bit , make sure it is stabble . Good luck .JUST LET US KNOW HOW YOU GET ON.Sorry for ca[pitals too much vino .

You won`t need extra hole, just put a layer of rubble, stone etc to allow drainage. Good luck with veg. They will be great.
I'm with TT on this one - what's the advantage of growing vegetables in a tub over growing them in the ground? The tub has to sit on aforementioned ground in any case - and you can't do anything else with the ground underneath it.
The only possible advantage I can think of is one doesn't have to bend down to tend them.
hi buildersmate-
deana may not have a lot of ground suitable for growing veg- the bath / or other containers , could be placed on a paved area eg
also the novelty value-
agree ground is best if poss tho'

Wow! Can't thank all you guys enough for all the advice and comments.
I was fully intending on attempting to grow the veges. in the usual way in the garden, but I have a sneaky feeling my dear friends are just wanting to recycle their old bath!
Thanks everyone - hopefully will be asking Answerbank for ideas on what to do with all the produce once I am successful. Then, of course beejay1124's soup suggestion will come into it's own.
