Today I turned my key board over to give it a shake and a tap to dislodge some bits from between the keys.

When I turn it back over, both my top & menu bars had disappeared, and the web page took up all the screen.

Can anyone please tell me how this happened, did I inadvertently press a certain key or keys?

I had to turn my computer off to restore it to normal.

Probably very simple reason - you hit a function key as you turned it.

On mine it is F11 - try that
Pressing F11 has the effects you describe - just press it again to undo.
You gave it a shake while it was on??

Hard drives don't like being shaken. That's how they get errors.
