icing a cake help needed fast !!

right folks i have promised my daughter i will make a birthday cake for her this is to be done today by the way i know how to make the sponge thanks to you guys giving me a fantastic recipe but i want to ice it as in the roll out stuff and then try to model something in marzipan for the top my question is this: do i need a layer of marzipan underneath the roll out icing and can i colour the icing myself and do i roll out a large round shape and drape over the cake or do the sides then the top i know this will sound stupid to you all but i am a beginner also does any one have a ecipe for the piping icing i have a piping set and the nozzles but want a good recipe forthis icing please help quick!!

1. Yes, I would put marzipan on first.
2. Buy the roll out icing. You can colour it yourself but be very very careful with the food colouring and add it drop by drop. It takes ages to knead in. I've never been totally successful with this and my icing usually has a marbled colour which actually looks quite pretty. You can buy coloured ready to roll icing but living in the sticks none of the shops where I am stock it.
3. Buy ready made Royal Icing for piping.
4. When covering the cake with the ready to roll icing, drape it over the top, smooth it down & trim.

many many thanks great advice made two in the end one for home one for school daughter was over the moon tasted delicious too thank you for saving my bacon you answered really quickly
