Hi i have a 98 renault megane 1.6e sport, the elec incident warning light came on and stayed on but the car continued to drive, then the light went out and the car started mis-firing, i pressed the accelerator but was loosing power then suddenly the power surged back and the car shot forward, this continued all the way home then the light came back on and the car drove ok. The car will drive with the light on but not when its off. The cooling fan also comes on at normal temp and theres white smoke from the exhaust. Any one any ideas?

sounds like a you have blown the cylinderhead gasket, check to see if there are traces of water in the oil, and/or vice versa, also run the engine from cold with the radiator cap off, if the water bubbles up that's another sign of the gasket being blown.
