the word is also used to mean a little... any sort of thing, really, but with a hint of 'gadget'.

You're probably referring to a 'dashboard widget'. This is a 'mini-application' which can be added to a Mac's dashboard to improve its functionality.

There are hundreds of them (mainly free) available for download from the Apple website. If you browse through the list you'll be able to see the type of things that they can do:
