What is the difference between diesel engine and petrol engine oil, and can petrol engine oil be used in diesel engines?

Huge, that's the difference. It's all down to the viscosity, a typical petrol engine oil will have viscosity of 10/40. But there are also all manner of additives to oil these days.

in fact not a lot. diesel engines used to be very dirty in terms of the burning of the fuel. it's not the case now as they are very much more sophisticated.
