game control pad for lap top not working properly

I bought a gamepad so that I could play a game on my laptop without having to use the keys and/or touchpad. However the direction buttons are mixed up ie if I point upwards, the character moves sideways and vise versa. Anyone got any ideas why?

No Boo it isn't.

Can anyone suggest how I sort it out - or should I just bring it back to the shop? (The shop advised that it should work on all PCs though)

Well if you don't receive any good advice tonight from here, I'd be tempted to take it back to the shop tomorrow if I was you.

Yes Boo - I had already planned to bring it back to the shop if someone here can't help me get it to work.
Problem now is that anyone looking at this question will see that there are 4 replies and maybe presume that the question has been answered already.

If the pad came with an installation disc is might have a configuration program on it to help let you set the buttons correctly. If not windows XP has its own version in the control panel/printers and other hardware section. It lets you adjust the controls too.

i got it sorted by getting a friend to help!
he changed the settings in the game controller part of the game (which I didn't know existed!)
