We went last year and out hotel was on the outskirts. I would go for a central hotel if I went again (google has lots of suggestions. You must try pasties de nata (custard tarts) while you're there - delicious

Take some warm clothes and start with an open-top bus tour if they are running (I think they will be) to get your bearings. I love Lisbon, the waterfront area is lovely.
If you can read the book, or even see the marvellous film with Jeremy Irons, Night train to Lisbon if you are unaware of either, I highly recommend doing so as it will give you an interesting perspective on where you are (at the same time as being highly entertaining).
We went in May and it rained every day :-)
I always look up The Independent’s 24 hours in ——.
Sometimes they are a bit out of date, but always useful and interesting.

a fun city and do try the old cafés (late in the evening), and also foodwise, Bacalhau à brás (scrambled eggs and salt cod), Cozido à Portuguesa (Portuguese stew) and their kale and potato soup, a national dish in its own right, Cala Verde.....then also head for the street caffs near Rossi Square and try the “Peixinhos da horta, a delish Portuguese tempura - the Café de São Bento is good for these. Late afternoon, folk pile into custard tarts, the Pastel de Nata, shots of vanilla and cinnamon in them.

The port area is best, we felt

Loved it but we felt 4-5 nights was just about enough. You can get a train to a beach resort. It is hilly but we like that
