I invited my niece and her boyfriend to Sunday lunch. I hadn't met him, and hadn't seen her for years, so I was horribly dismayed to see how huge they both were. Both morbidly obese. In fact, they broke the feet and castors on the settee when they sat on it. The dining chairs creaked ominously, too. They both said how much they'd love to come again, and meet the rest of the family, but honestly I don't think my furniture will stand it, even if I get the settee mended. Any ideas where to go from here ?

They could have one if they wanted without bankrupting Atalanta, NoM.

Though perhaps it is now their turn to issue the invitation?
I think the obese person is now " fair game " for ridicule.
They're fair game for diabetes, cancer, heart disease and many other killer conditions.
Why 'now' anne?
Quite an ignorant attitude. Obese people don't always eat huge portions in one sitting.
anne?
I went out with a group of friends in Birmingham and as the only obese person there I ate a lot less than some of the self thought skinny ones!!
I just lost half my cup of tea... :-)

I'm fat (18stone) and I have been a bit heavier. I am unable to work due to health problems and don't get the exercise that I used to.

It is easy to pass judgement and give ill-founded guidance but it will not do any good. It isn't all about eating too much - life is more complicated than that.
Jesus wolf you are very brave, careful it doesn't come back to bite you in the *** xxx
Islay - that would be my big, fat butt?
NoMercy: "They're fair game for diabetes, cancer, heart disease and many other killer conditions."

and this is your business how?
I'm entitled to an opinion, Woofgang.
So in your expertise medical opinion nomercy do only fat people get those illnesses or do thin people get them to?
I'm thin, I have diabetes (Type 1 granted), Hashimotos disease ( I'm still thin- should be fat, but still thin) and a few other things as well. S, so you seeometimes our health is down to genetics ( the luck of the draw if you like), sometimes it's down to lifestyle (I'll eat a pizza and do no exercise if I bloody well want) or sometimes it's a whole lot more complicated than simply either ( and STILL not alright to attack someone about their weight/ lifestyle choices). why can't people show a little kindness, a little humility and a little decency? Obese people are not objects with no feelings, they are living breathing human beings who deserve to be treated with as much respect as a thin person, why is that so hard to understand?
How about getting a smaller front door.
NoM I am tempted to quote the well known phrase about opinions....
I have to agree with Islay - anyone who is very overweight already knows it, so doesn't need to to told it.
