In my opinion gengejbee is correct, putting something on top of a bad mattress is a waste of effort and money. I understand that the medical profession advises a mattress that remains flat and firm to avoid back pain. to cause it? prevent it? ease it?

your question isn't clear.
Try a memory foam one.
I have a medium Memory foam ..very comfy
younger alba (23) suffers back pain, and has a medium memory foam mattress, it's as comfy as anything.
He hasn't complained about back-pain for quite a while.
I've got one that is like a feather quilt. I have never slept so well.

I get pains in my shoulders and hips and used to spend the night tossing and turning. Since I put the topper on I've slept like a baby every night.
Even the "best" topper won't do much for back pain if the underlying mattress is poor. Better spend money on a decent mattress...then a topper becomes superfluous.
I have never owned anything other than Dunlopillo latex mattresses...none better, IMO.
I have a feather one too which I love the only issue is that you have to shake it up every couple of days - or at least that's what I have found
In my opinion gengejbee is correct, putting something on top of a bad mattress is a waste of effort and money. I understand that the medical profession advises a mattress that remains flat and firm to avoid back pain. We (70-ish) sleep on mattresses which are extremely firm and neither of us has ever had back pain. Visitors from Australia recently used these and remarked that they slept extremely well with one of them particularly mentioning that the joint pains that normally come with waking up simply were not there. Another couple recently asked me what it was about our bed that led to them sleeping so well on it...... when they visited us in 2010 !

The bed has a plywood base which does not give at all and the mattress is 7cm thick of a material sometimes called upholstery foam (made up of shredded foams of many different types, then glued back into a block) and has very limited give. Oddly enough, advertisers of mattresses tend to emphasise the large number and types of springs, the overall thickness of the mattress (is it meant to give by as much as 40cm or more ?) and its ability to be shaped (and also beds that can be be bent into a variety of shapes, including that of a hammock). Presumably the medics regard these as creators of back problems.
Not entirely true Karl. As a retired Occupational Therapist, I don't think there is much in the way of objective general medical recommendation or research, either for maintaining good back health or pain reduction where there is a back problem. Its fairly well accepted that sleeping on a mattress that forces the body to adopt an unnatural position because the surface is both uneven and unyielding (think old mattress or bumpy ground) or so soft that it provides not support, is not likely to be comfortable but apart from that, it very much depends on the individual.

I have a sever bad back, injured about 10 years ago. We bought a Simba mattress this year and honestly it's the comfiest mattress I've ever laid on. And it comes with 100 days free trial.
