I'm really getting fed up of characters texting each other in programs, things that may be important to the storyline.

I can't always see and read that quickly and we are not always staring at the screen for the whole show, we must look away sometimes.

I'm sure I'm missing bits because of this.

If you don't already have one get yourself a recording device. Record the prog you are interested in then playback the parts you are missing.
I would get a view boxie think
the one that allows you to see 125 completely crop channels
awful television that makes you think AB is full of Einsteins at least

then you can record and go back

and no you probably arent loosing the plot
the plots usually have holes in them

Mrs Miniver this morning - didnt have Xs on the windows or air raid sirens during the air raid......
( and she doesnt text Vin Min ( told you!) when he is in his aircraft that his dinner is on the table)
Just watched the appallingly bad 'The Hippopotamus' base on Stephen Fry's book. The main character has chats on text, and little speech bubbles appear on the television screen. It is one solution, but it didn't save a dreadful film.

I've noticed it a lot in soaps. "Meet me behind the bike sheds" kind of thing.
Oh but it is so stylish and so hip. As a director you can show yourself to be cutting edge and everybody will love you forever because you are so street and urban! ooh it is so cool. Eveybody loves it because you is so cool and went to Southampton Uni and did a course in it.
