It would seem that if you are a white, straight model, you are already experiencing 'perceived discrimination'.

The survey in the article said the population was 87.2%, 2% mixed race, 6.9% Asian, 3% black and just 1% othere. Perhaps rather than trying not to appear racist or homophobic or whatever the trendy thing is (as the article imply) they should be looking at population % and cast accordingly. If advertisers are trying to catch their customer base then the 87.2% is...

cassa, i don't think adverts only appeal to me if white people are in them (despite the fact i'm white). I quite like advertizers that share my world view too - ie that people can be gay or straight and it's no biggie; they can want to buy holidays, furniture and financial products.people can have different shades of skin and hair and it's unremarkable too
I am more likely to buy something if I see someone that is similar to me modelling it or using it, I am sure that goes for others black or white, straight or gay.
ANOTHEOLDGIT,Dove may have picked women from different countries but why do you not have a go at identifying who comes from abroad?
I'm an actress and we have this in my industry a lot. BAME actors are under represented and therefore some roles are specified BAME in most modern productions. Advertisers wants to keep their clients happy and flog their products therefore they must appeal to the broadest clientele by including people of their ethnicity, sex and shape. It's no big deal, and I don't know a white actor or model that feels hard done by.
It's been increasing obvious of late that advertising is geared more towards minority representation. Didn't need a newspaper article to tell us. Feels odd to see it more dominant since it doesn't reflect reality in the country. Sign of the times I suspect. Commercial concerns are always keener to attract new custom and assume loyal customers won't mind. They're probably right.
the pace of change ?
It's time we stopped bandying the word "diversity" around as though it was some sort of perversion - or fetish - depending on your point of view.
Real life is diverse. It is time some people caught up with that fact.
Perhaps advertisers should feature only the more popular section of the population, women?
Interesting advertising concept TCL.
ANOTHEOLDGIT objects to advertisers pandering to minorities and men are a minority in the UK.
Should Advertisers Pander To Diversity?

Yes. Absolutely.
On one hand AOG claims were being overrun by immigrants and then gives BA to someone for pointing out that foreign settlers are a very small percentage of our demographic.
Can't wait to point this out in future.
