Furthermore, it should be a criminal offence for all cyclist to be using a Mobile Phone whilst in traffic and traversing on the inside of all other vehicles and also down the centre of two lanes of traffic.

I agree wholeheartedly. I do hope that if such legislation were passed it would be also enforeced upon jay-walking pedestrians who appear to think themselves car-proof whilst crossing the road with their phone pressed to their ear, oblivious to all around them.

As for the poster who complained about cyclists and 'tax', which tax would that be? Road tax? You mean the tax you believe exists but actually doesn't, yes? I'm guessing you're getting confused with a Vehicle Excise Licence, as ALL tax payers incur the costs of maintaining Britain's roads, yes?

Yes, this young man was riding a pedal cycle that didn't have a front brake. The injuries from the collisison came about as a result of a clash of heads, not injuries caused by the bike. Those foaming at the mouth over this need to get a bit of perspective. To my knowledge this is the second person who has died as a result of being struck by a cyclist in the UK in the last 50 years. 122 cyclists alone were killed on Britain's roads in 2012.

It is sad that a yound woman lost her life in a tragic accident and her actions prior to the collision are yet to be determined, so let's not hang, draw and quarter the lad just yet.
Road tax is the same as the EU divorce bill. It doesn't exist except in the mind and consciousness of the people in this country.

If road tax doesn't exist then neither does the supreme divorce bill.. win win.
Supreme! that should have been EU. That's auto correct for you.
No idea what that was about cassa, but just to enlighten a few:

Well it was obvious to me, perhaps it is the auto correct that makes it indecipherable lol

There is no road tax in the same way there is no EU divorce bill.

They may not exist but people believe they do.

Absolutely no need for expensive admin and enforcement.
Issue pedestrians with a sawn-off broom handle to
a: Stop the bike by sticking it in the spokes and
b: Use same to beat miscreant for their trouble.

Order restored.
They usually kill the user due to the lack of protection it offers, the lack of visibility it gives other road users due to their small size, and the fact that cycling on the public roads is close to deliberately trying to achieve injury or death anyway. But like dog bites man isn't news but man bites dog is, cyclists killing pedestrians gets reported as unusual. It's also surprising it happened on the road, don't most cycle on the pavements ?

I see a quite a few children and the odd female cycling on the pavement, generally as a result of poor and sometimes aggressive driving, but ignorance is bliss I guess.

From the link:

More than two million people across the country now cycle at least once a week, an all-time high according to British Cycling, the sport's governing body in the UK.

For businesses in the cycling industry this means booming sales. At Halfords, which is responsible for one in three bikes sold in the UK, sales of its bicycles were up 11% in the year to 27 March 2015.
This growth was led by the retailer's most expensive "premium bikes", which saw sales expand by 24.9%, following growth of 30% in the previous 12 months.

Meanwhile, sales of UK manufactured bikes rose by 69% in 2014, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Cycling clothing firm Rapha, which supplies the Team Sky pro road bike team, is another business to have benefited from the big increase in the number of people cycling.

The London-based business says its sales have grown by more than 30% per annum for 11 years in a row.

So if most 'cycle on the pavement' that's more than a million people cycling illegally, weaving dangerously at breakneck speed amongst the pedestrians!! I'm amazed that deaths caused by pushiron aren't in their hundreds.....
I'm an odd female, Chill but I manage to cycle on the road....though if I have to keep reading that most of us cycle on the pavement I feel I might just do that so as not to disappoint..... :-)
I positively advocate it at some junctions gness!
I get a lot of female colleagues saying they'd love to cycle but don't have the confidence to do so on the roads. I've been cycling for over 40 years so am confident enough but understand the reluctance of those who aren't as proficient.
More cycling infrastructure is the answer, along with changing the mindset of a generation.
The former will come about far sooner than the latter, sadly.
There are times when I'm tempted to just get onto the pavement, Chill.....
I love my bike and though most drivers are considerate and behave as they should the few who don't are a pain.
Cycling around the estate I find a motorist will continue to overtake a parked car and head towards me......they'd stop, as they should, if I was in my car...but don't when I'm on my bike...
Now I just halt, smile and wait....they'll have to reverse if there is no room for us both and the parked car.

In Ireland we're having the.....1.5 Stay Alive...campaign.....1.5mt. being the space you must give a cyclist when overtaking...

I've been looking at how cyclists are treated in the Netherlands and just wish we could adopt the same attitude here.....x

Indeed, but that would mean people getting of their backsides and the Playstation Generation putting down their devices and getting a bit of fresh air! It's part of the ethos and culture of the Netherlands and indeed a lot of northern Europe, if only it were so here.
In turn, I'm an advocate of lights, high-viz clothing and helmets being a legal requirement and cyclists sanctioned for misdemeanours. I ride to the Highway Code, I fully expect my fellow cyclists to do their utmost to also, via experience, education and training.
When was the last time a local bobby was present during a cycling proficiency test/course? It was customary for one to pop in and observe during said course when I was in school.

If only it were thus here. Maybe one day......probably after 2040, when cars will all be elctric.
There is an interesting article by Laura Laker from when she did an exchange for a month and spent much of it cycling in The Netherlands.
It interested me that in a collision between a larger, faster vehicle and a slower more vulnerable one the former is liable by default unless proven otherwise by the driver/rider of the larger vehicle....

This means that pedestrians are well protected.....cyclists respected....and everyone more careful and aware of other road users.....I like this!....x
Yes....I've looked at that too, Chill.....and it's how it should be....

I have seen youths with no protection or high viz clothes riding stupidly and this must annoy motorists...but then we all get the stick for their behaviour......

But I've seen motorists driving with total disregard for the presence of a cyclist.....and read on AB the attitude of some motorists towards us.....

Be nice if we could all be thoughtful and a bit kind......
Just been looking at Fiesstraat, Chill....where bikes are considered the preferred and primary form of transport with motorised vehicles being allowed "as guests"........oh bliss!!!!.... :-)
Just breaking on BBC News, cleared of manslaughter but guilty of 'wanton and furious driving'.
Sounds a bit ridiculous as a charge considering an expert estimated his speed as between 10 and 14 mph.
