to state on-line as you are shopping, that X people are now looking at this product, and X have just bought it?

But when I went to buy, it was out of stock, and the same in other post code areas.
When I phoned their H/O sales, they said they wouldn't be stocking it again!

I know its a ploy to encourage people to buy, but its just telling porkies!

How can it be encouraging you to buy something they haven't got?
If you prove they were lying then you may have cause for complaint.

I usually click away thinking, I don't want to be seen wearing what everyone else is.
I assume trt means that it is being done across the board - it just so happened that in this case the item was out of stock
I can see it works with holidays/hotels but ut wouldn't influence me on the purchases of things like groceries or clothes

NJ: Because they said, they had just bought it, 'Doh'

It was for a TV
one of my sil's pet hates is when she's in the supermarket, shopping away, and the pickers get in her road.
Just as she's about to pick up (say the last can of whatever) a picker arrives to leave the shelf empty due to those wot shop on-line.
Interesting question. Might be worth speaking to your local trading standards officers on Monday
i`ve only seen that on travel stuff but it doesnt sway my choices one iota. There are usually other options that fit just as well so whatever they are hawking is of little interest.
Name and shame the company, trt

##Name and shame the company, trt##

Its Argos HC, and since my first post, my daughter and I picked 4 different TVs, from their site, which had the same messages coming up etc, but all out of stock, in Newmarket, Cambridge, Surrey, Manchester, and Birmingham.

So are they putting lots of TVs on their site, so it looks like they have a big selection?

Will definitely be contacting T/S on Monday, as I hate these company's, trying to pull the wool over our eyes.
It certainly could put you in to 'panic buying' if you thought they were selling out fast - shoddy practice.

Some folks are just not happy without something to moan about!!
It's sharp practice, but I've no idea if lying is illegal, and in practice would be impractical to prove and get a conviction for. But you can share info on who, in your opinion, seems to be trying it on.
you are asking if Bait-and-change is lawful in this country
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bait-and-switch

and it seems it is not - - BUT you might have to show intention

otherwise the notices would say - "X on sale here - when we have any"
I find it hard to have sympathy for someone who came on here bragging about photocopying vouchers....which is illegal!!

That statement coming from you Baldric, has made my w/end :-).

You must be one of the biggest whingers on A/B by far :-(

## I find it hard to have sympathy for someone who came on here bragging about photocopying vouchers....which is illegal!! ##

Theres a big difference between a packet of crisp, and a £400.00+ TV, Ummmm?
It wasn't a packet of crisps though. It was you printing off vouchers and getting free nappies....illegally!

So your right to complain about illegalities is somewhat diminished.
Paragraphs 6 and 7 of Schedule 1 to the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 might well be relevant here:

// So your right to complain about illegalities is somewhat diminished.//

so excuse me - so if you're a shop lifter ( only part time - you do pay for something ) you can clout your child ?
OR
if you had just lifted chewing gum and you came outta the shop and saw someone being roped - you would walk on and cluck - "ho hum I shouldna taken the gum: it is just not her day......"

or are the vouchers and bait-and-change completely unrelated ?

normal day on AB coming up ....
