Postman 'lost' Parcel.

The postman wasn't able to deliver a parcel to my neighbours so he left it with people in the large (converted to flats) house to their right, (rather than the small family house to the left, or my house, next but one. He had left mail with me that morning and knew I was in.) He left an official note to say where it was.
The big house has seven flats with individual tenants. As my elderly neighbours can't climb the steps to the front door, I went and rang all the bells till I got an answer. One man came to the door and said he knew nothing about the parcel. It's still early for those who are working (the parcel was left at 0930), and I said I would try again after 6.00pm in the hope more people are home.
Should the parcel never be handed over, what is the next step?

Sorry, ignore all of the above.
The elderly neighbour has just rung to say the postman put the wrong number on the card, and in fact did leave it with the small family house, and it is now in their possession.
Thanks.
Out of interest what sort of delivery was it? If it was from a business (eg amazon) or ebay then if it hadn't been found it would be for the sender to take up with the Royal mail
A Christmas present for me from my partner went missing in this way last year - we had a note to say the package had been left with a neighbour, but the neighbour denied all knowledge. We got in touch with Amazon to explain, and they sent us another one. (And my Frasier boxset and I lived happily ever after!)

It was a present from her niece from in another part of the UK.
They had been on the phone a few days before, and she was expecting it.
