Hi techie answerbankers out there ... I've just been listening to the Gadget Detective guy on Radio 5 and he was saying that Apple will be changing to their IOS 11 (that right?) operating system in the autumn, and that thousands of people with older devices won't be able to use them because this new OS won't support older devices. Or did I understand incorrectly? So, if that is right, does that mean that neither my husband nor I will be able to use our several year old Apple Ipads (the mini) after the change to IOS11? Sounds very ominous and I have a feeling that we're going to have to get ourselves new ipads. Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Cheers, Chox.

That is correct Apple will no longer provide support for the older model ipads and iphones
amazin' what you can find on the internet ain't it:

I don't know the answer, but from a distance this seems like further confirmation that Apple cynically make their products obsolete to boost further sales.

If this turns out to be true, I suggest you boycott them and move to the competition.

We thought as much. Does anyone know if there's a firm date for the changeover - and on that date will our Apple ipads just stop working, and that's that? We will definitely be moving to the opposition if that's the case. Chox.
no, your stuff won’t just stop working. I have got an original ipad and an iphone 4 and an older macbook air, all still work fine. What you will find is that as apps update to work with new iOS’s, then there will be less app options.

Thanks for the reassurance, woofgang. Two new ipads won't come cheap - we don't get new apps that often, just use certain apps (which we have had for ages) most of the time. However, if we do decide to get new ones in the future, we will patronise the opposition! I knew someone would be able to help! Bit of a "phew" around here!
chokkie....moving to Android won't stop the problem. Some tablets with Android OSs only guarantee 2 years of operation form the date of sale.
which mini have you got? Mine is the original mini and the OS is 9.3.5 and no longer updates. my iphone is on 7.1.2 and my original ipad is on 5.1.1 and still works. As I said, increasingly new apps won’t run on them but the ones I have got loaded already work fine.
As per Woofgang's answers your iPad will continue to work fine as will the apps you have on them. The real bug bear is if one has an iPad which can update to IOS 11 but one also has a bunch of useful apps which will NOT work on IOS 11 and won't be updated as they've been 'abandoned', what to do in this instance? Blummin' technology :-)
Fitzer...have an old ipad in reserve :)
