Jeremy Vine (on Radio 2 at midday today) is about to discuss the revelation of the salaries of the top earners at the BBC. I wonder how on earth he will justify the reported £700,000 he receives every year.

Does he have to justify to anybody?

Well, if I were him I'd be pretty embarrassed (to say the least) to have to tell his listeners that what he does is worth anything like that much. I expect some robust contributions to his show.
Yes but, but, but he's a Celeb!!!! :/
Jeremy Vine is awful...I can't listen to him on the radio and have seen him render Eggheads unwatchable. I would not pay a penny to see him on any format. Is he worth that amount of money? In my opinion absolutely not. ..... OOOO I feel better for getting that off my chest! Thank you
I have never found myself capable of judging anyone's worth in monetary terms, what criteria do we use?

Is it people we like, programmes that appeal or whether their eyes are too close together.

I really haven't a clue.

Are we to have a thread on each individual named in the salary report?
Well, he earns a fraction of others like Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood and Chris Evans so I think he is worth every penny myself.
I'd like to know how the BBC top salaries compare with, say, Sky News readers and Sky Sports reporters and pundits.

I can't imagine Kay Burley from Sky News being happy to reveal her pay packet.

The first thing I would consider is can we get someone else who can do the job just as good but much cheaper.
Like you would if you wanted a plumber.
Now goodgoalie, what do you think that you are worth on the BBC or, indeed, any media channel - and what do you think that you should be paid?
You are right, I didn't word my reply clearly - I meant worth in these terms, entertainment, sports etc.

I know I am up against people who rail against the TV Licence whilst I pay it happily and find it both affordable and worthwhile.

Shopping for a commodity or a tradesman is rather different.
I would pay my Licence just for Radio 4, In my opinion John Humphrys is worth every penny he gets. Not keen on Jeremy Vine though
agree on mazie's comment, though there are one or two I would add into the equation.....however, there's also that Norton character who, frankly, ought to pay us £850k plus the rest, for us to watch him.
I listened to the programme this morning. A Welshman phoned in and asked him if he was embarrassed at receiving a large salary. JV reply was he felt lucky,he was asked if he could justify it, which he refused to answer but then he didn't have to, the head of radio had already been on the programme and told JV how wonderful he was. I did notice it was one of the shortest pieces ever broadcasted on the JV show, they wanted it out of the way very quickly. I think they are vastly overpaid considering just how long they are on the radio, I like Ken Bruce, but a quarter of a million for 12. 5 hours a week?
I think to know what a person earns would never interest me as it does not enhance my life or make me richer.
Ken Bruce does more than 12.5 hours a week. That's just the bit you hear.
What do they do outside of broadcasting hours, they all admit they have teams that work for them?

Mamya, I chose Jeremy Vine specifically because not only is his salary eye-wateringly large (in my opinion) but also because he - alone among all those named - was about to address the issue on his own phone-in show: a show in which he no doubt would be tackled directly about this topic, and have to make some sort of comment on what he thought about the amount he is paid. I wanted to alert ABers that the programme was coming up.
When asked by the Welsh caller directly, all he could find to say was that he 'felt lucky every day'. I should say so!

By the way, DTCwordfan I have appeared on BBC shows, and I can assure you that I was paid a tiny tiny fraction of the sums talked about today.
I understand it just appeared at the time there were threads popping up in a number of places. :-)

Everyone's entitled to their views, just doesn't bother me enough in the grand scheme.

Sorry if I cam across grumpy.

goodgoalie - are you famous?

Jeremy Vine makes me cringe. When I get into work on a Monday afternoon he is there prattling on about stupid stuff. I am a radio Tay girl,
It's a free, capitalist society we live in. If anyone had the skills necessary to front a live Q&A show with an audience of millions, they deserve market value. The Welsh bloke wittering on about miners just didn't get it.
