I agree with Islay's MIL, except I'll walk into the sea at night with a bottle of vodka.
Whereas my grand parents were in a home, Gramps a nursing home and nan a care home. They loved it. Nans home was like a hotel...but when you pay for it you get to chose.

Granddad resisted going into care so we compromised and agreed on a trial week. He loved it and put the house on the market!
I can see gizmonster agree that the system, like any means tested system, can be seen as penalising thrift, providing you think it's good to be in relative poverty by age 75 and want to have no choice as regards a care home. But if I blow it all at age 60 and then don't need to go in a care home later on then i would kick myself if I had to live in relative poverty at age 75.
Also I'm not sure what you mean by "end up in a care home and end up getting screwed by the authorities".
Why would one be being screwed by the authorities?
Sell it to him and then get him to rent it back to you at the going rate, then get yourself a big safe, have it securly installed into 'his' house then every week withdraw say £500 in cash from your bank and stick it in the safe, tell your son about this and when you die, the cash is his and nobody will know about it!
I suggest that you consult a solicitor about a "Family Asset Protection Trust".

and then possibly see a solicitor
I agree with Islay's MIL. I hope when the time comes that I am unable to look after myself and a care home is considered, that I will still have the faculties to avoid the necessity of a care home either by going to Dignitas, or some other, more personal method.
