With the recent headlines little if any coverage has been given to Mrs May's determination to leave Euratom as well as leaving the EU !
I suspect very few realise the consequences of such a decision.

Put simply Euratom controls the entire European stocks of and access to Nuclear fuel!
Once out of Euratom , Euratom is a separate entity to the EU and we have been in Euratom since 1959, we no longer have access to fuel for our newly commissioned ,French / Chinese built, nuclear power plants!

project fear continues eh judge?
Most oncologist and radiotherapists I know are worried about this.

Yes, all trading and transportation of nuclear materials within the EU is governed by Euratom and, yes it is possible to set up alternative arrangements, but this is a complex and time consuming endeavour.
The UK has to negotiate a new relationship with Euratom, pass new legislation to set up safeguarding procedures, train personnel in a field with skills shortage, and strike up deals with other countries such as Japan - as many as twenty deals in all, not to mention a new agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
It is very unlikely that this can be done by 2019.

Not Project Fear, more like Project Difficult Reality.
Some things will be tricky some things seemingly impossible but they will be sorted out. Some thing just stopping the DD will be enough and some not. It all gets sorted in the wash.

And it is thanks to people like Eddie who point out things the negotiators have missed that is so important. Without the likes of Eddie so much important stuff would get forgotten. Thank you Eddie.
cobblers slaney, Euratom is not an EU operation, nothing will changes. Same people do the same thing.
TTT , are you saying we won't leave Euratom?

Not what the select committee of the H of C says...

https://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/business-energy-industrial-strategy/news-parliament-2015/leaving-eu-energy-climate-change-report-published-16-17/

"The Committee says withdrawal from Euratom is an unfortunate, and perhaps unforeseen, consequence of Prime Minister's objective of ending the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice in the UK. Ministers must end the uncertainty and resolve the matter by securing alternative arrangements as urgently as possible, the report adds."

Slaney has it correct. It is NOT necessary to get out of Euratom as well as leaving the EU. We can leave the EU but still be in Euratom.
I honestly do not think Mrs May understands the problems she is causing by insisting we get out of Euratom as well as out of the EU. Even some of her senior ministers have told her it is a very bad idea.
We were in Euratom years before we were in the EU, Euratom will still exist after we leave. There is a worldwide shortage of Nuclear fuel materials, which is getting worse as more N power stations are built. Euratom controls the entire European stocks of Nuclear fuel and is the only organisation in Europe that is authorised to buy it.
How do you think the suppliers of fuel will react to one state starting it's own N fuel purchase organisation when there is not enough to go round anyway? At the very least they will demand a much higher price! as they will have to cancel contracts with other European nations!

Many senior government ministers have pointed out the leaving Euratom is a serious mistake but Mrs May seems to take no notice!
It is only the 'Brexit' negotiations that are keeping May in office, once they are over she is history anyway, so I suppose she does not really care.
so why are we leaving eurotom anyone know?
That woman is a train wreck. She just doesn't think of the consequences of her actions. Oh for the days of politicians of stature. I didn't like Maggie Thatcher and disagreed with her policies but at least she was not for turning or a ditherer
“Slaney has it correct. It is NOT necessary to get out of Euratom as well as leaving the EU. We can leave the EU but still be in Euratom.”

Very true. But matters in which Euratom is involved has the European Court of Justice as arbiters. One of the points of leaving the EU is to be free of the jurisdiction of that court. There’s little point in leaving the EU if the country is still to be bound by decisions made in a court that has no influence (for the UK) over anything else. The mistake, of course, was allowing Euratom to be subsumed into the jurisdiction of the ECJ and to be influenced by EU institutions. If it had remained an independent body (as it was originally founded) I doubt there would be this issue.

“Euratom controls the entire European stocks of Nuclear fuel and is the only organisation in Europe that is authorised to buy it.”

You’re doing it again, Eddie. It controls the stocks held by (and sought by) its members, not “the entire European stocks”. It is the only organisation in the area covered by its members authorised to trade in atomic material.

“…so why are we leaving eurotom anyone know?”

I should think, almost certainly, because it is an organisation which although a separate legal entity, it is influenced heavily by the European Commission and has any dispute it is involved in adjudicated in the ECJ. I think Mrs May, for all her faults, has understood that one of the principle reasons the UK electorate voted to leave the EU was so as to be rid of decisions made by foreign judges.
