Does anyone remember them going round the local pubs selling cockles and mussels etc?

Yep...they tended to visit the clubs rather than pubs.

Followed by the Salvation Army selling the Watchtower, most people contributed but few took the paper.
I've never lived in London.

Here they only sold in clubs. I loved them btw.
It was pubs in Bradford too.Always welcomed by the landlord because the saltiness of the seafood made one thirstier.

Yes I loved them!!!! My fave was the whelks!!!! They still sell them down Walthamstow market and on a Saturday I usually treat myself!
No connection whatsoever.
I wonder how many times the seller was asked if he'd got crabs?:-)
