Years ago my mum used the make coleslaw usng a bottle of kraft coleslaw dressing. I've not seen it in the shops for ages, possibly about thirty or so years. When I make coleslaw I just use mayo which never has that same taste...until today!
I found a recipe online for what has turned out to be pretty close to that original dressing...mayo, sweetener or sugar, cider vinegar, and mustard powder. Absolutely lovely :)
I think in the past people used salad cream which has a much more vinegary (and nicer) taste than mayo for coleslaw, unfortunately it's gone right out of fashion. Maybe it's the cider vinegar that has made all the difference.
Possibly Prudie, and the sweetener, I remember it being quite a sweet ish taste. I've tried making it with salad cream but I've found that too vinegary.
If you've a mind to mamy, try making it with the dressing recipe I've just found, it really is nice..
One cup mayo, 2 tbsns sweetner, 2 tbspns cider vinegar and half a tsp mustard powder, or tweak it around to your taste.
It's taken me back to when my mum made it :)
Yep, a bit like egg mayo sandwiches, I always use salad cream not mayo.
Never made mayo myself, so many good ones available in the shops I've never felt the need to.
If anyone does make this dressing, just use one tablespoon of sugar or sweetener to start with, two might be a bit sweet for some tastes.
