Milk Spoiling Too Quickly?

Five times in a row now, the milk in my fridge has spoiled more or less a day after I bought it. My fridge is on maximum power and the door is always closed properly.

I live on the 6th floor of a student dorm - it's so hot in there at the moment that I cannot comfortably be in there during the day so I sit in the library until the sun goes down. At the moment, this heat is the only factor I can think of that's changed from a few months ago, when this didn't happen.

I find it a bit implausible though that my room is just so hot that it renders my fridge useless. Is that really the most likely explanation or is it more likely to be the place where I buy milk?

Do other things go off in the fridge? If not, I would say that getting your milk from another shop might help.

Get a thermometer to test the internal fridge temperature. But I'd suspect storage before purchase.

Get your milk from the back. When they stock the shelves they move all the stock to the front.

What use by date does the milk have on it? I agree, start by getting a fridge thermometer and monitoring the internal temp, also looking at what else you keep in the fridge and is that going off too? I buy Cravendale milk which isn’t sterilised but is filtered and has quite a long use by date.....final thought is that if your room is that hot then the fridge motor might be cutting out because it overheats....might be worth monitoring the temp in the room itself.

I had the same problem buying milk from the corner shop...it went off in a day.I happened to be in there one day when a health inspector was telling he owner that his fridge was on a too low temperature...I stopped buying milk there !! I have long found that longlife skimmed milk lasts for ages in the fridge once opened. I have used that for years.

Assuming that your fridge is working at the optimum temperature - between 37°F(3°C) and 40°F (5°C), one contributor may be where you store the milk. Keeping it in the door is not recommended as it is the warmest place, This article may help:-

I would get a fridge thermometer but I'm not staying in that place for very much longer so it doesn't feel worth it. I think instead I'll take Mally's advice and buy longlife.

I buy semi-skimmed milk, and a litre last me for at least 5 days in my fridge. Its got to be the fridge at fault. But full cream milk doesn't last as long.
