NI continuations pay for NHS, social care, pensions, unemployment benefits, maternity, disability benefits and such like.
When broken down how much does your NI contribution amount to over a lifetime for each department?
Considering there is talk of low income people not actually paying that much in proportionally (but still get something back in tax credits etc) what is a fare share?
I think everyone should pay the same but all benefits other than NHS and medical care should be means tested.

I agree Eddie, I think at some point in time an attempt to make the State Pension means tested will be made.
However, the State have been asking people to make up the credit if they are short with the warning that they wont get a full State Pension. If any Government tried to remove it after such moves I think it would be political suicide. Not sure how legal that would be either. Could be interesting.
Perhaps more reasons not to save and let the State take care of you, the foreigners and feckless who have put little or nothing in seem to be more thought of.

Some are always going on about Private Pensions, but these are not dished out to privileged people in privileged jobs, Some have to pay part of their salaries into them for the whole of their working life, it's called providing for one's retirement.
When one has reached retirement age and paid their taxes and contributed to the good of their country in other ways, surely they should not be deprived of a small payment for their winter warmth?

AOG Never heard of a scheme where you pay a fixed amount for energy regardless of the amount used . It would be wide open to abuse, just connect your leccy to the oap next door and get free power!
There is a similar scheme for water which I am on. That is a fixed tariff regardless of the amount actually used , available for pensioners on a fixed income.

'twas true Eddie because I was once to be on it, I do believe that the scheme was brought to an end by the Government, can't remember by which one though.
Regarding water I thought that everyone who choose not to have a water meter could use as much water as they want for a fixed charge, although the monthly fixed charge seems to increase each year.

Yes I agree, what is it about scimping and saving to pay one's mortgage so as in later years, being able to say "I own my own house" then in later years the possibility that the government grabs your home to pay for your after-care.?

The Conservative manifesto means many more people will have to pay the full cost of their care, but the payment will come out of their estate after death .

Yes it looks like 'Spending the kid's inheritance ' ( Skiing) is going to become more worthwhile!
I'm glad I have never been in a position to even consider buying my own home , as a lifelong housing association tenant and now on Pension credit the conservatives can't do much to harm me!
