Two clues that I can't crack. Any help appreciated.

CLUE 1: 'Where sailors salute diamonds' : 11 letters of which the 2d is U, and the 6th may be E.


CLUE 2: 'Square grating held out' This clue has two words, 1st with 5 letters (??G?T), the 2d with 6 letters (N?L??).
