Iwas shcked to discover that there's no programme with W10 that allows you to play DVDs. I've downloaded an app but every time I insert one, the default is that Windows goes to the store to find an app instead of playing. How do I change the default please?

Windows DVD Player is on my W10 machine and was not added or paid for by me. Just double checked on my Laptop and Windows DVD Player is there and working as well.
Don't know why you've got it, SlackAlice, nobody else has. I have W10 Home and W10 Pro
Another way to find your DVD drive is to type 'This pc' into the search box and click on the top result
Anyhooo, to get back to OP question. When you put the DVD in to your machine you should have a box pop up (it pops up bottom right for me) asking what you want to do. Click on that box and you should see the options, including 'Open With....'

It seems the DVDs I was trying out were turkeys and I tried one I'd recorded and that worked - thanks for your help guys and gals, all your suggestions helped me to find my way round Windows 10.

TC - yes I got that box and clicked look for programme - and got stuck with it. However, I've tried another DVD and managed at last to play it. Thanks
