A friends just rang me - she sold her house 6 months ago and moved in with her parents whilst she waits to have a house built on a plot of land she's bought. House won't be ready for ages - it's still just a piece of land. She's just come out with the fact that she is still paying council tax on the house she sold! When I asked her why she said that she wrote to the council and told them she didn't own it anymore and would be cancelling the direct debit for the council tax and they've replied this morning telling her not to do that till they've done their own investigations into this and she should hear back in 3 - 4 months! Surely that's not right?

Doesn't seem right but I guess that if she has overpaid, then she will get her money back.

Alternatively, she could just cancel the DD ad see what happens !
doesn't that mean the council are receiving two payments for the same property?

Just tell her to send them a copy of the Land Registry transfer and cancel the DD. Idiots.

Hopefully she is on the electoral roll at her parents so they can check that.
Could she not send them copies of the sale paperwork?
Never heard of it before. Whenever I've moved I've just updated my address with them and they reassessed my bill.

I've never heard of it before either but she's is a really worrier and has got this bee in her bonnet that she'll get in trouble . I've told her to just cancel it . And yes they must be getting two lots of council tax
She should get reimbursed.

I actually cannot believe they sent such a letter - just strange!! And it's £120 per month she's paying. Completely mad.
