Girl wreathed in lilac cultivated from an earlier time (9)
The answer is CLASSICAL: the wordplay seems to be lass (girl) with an anagram of 'lilac' round it - but CICAL isn't an anagram of lilac. Or am I missing something?

cass (girls name) + lilac?
Probably a setter's error.
Question Author
Possibly, but 'wreathed' should be telling us to put something round something, I reckon, not mix up CASS and LILAC
Or maybe not AEl might have it,
I also thought it an error.
A mistake by the setter.
And can anyone parse 40ac for me, while we're at it? "Break even during different sales initially (11)". Answer must be 'elevenses', but here too I suspect there's a mistake on the setter's part...
Question Author
Hi, Number 1. Agree it's ELEVENSES: put 'even' inside ELSE (different), then add S (sales initially)
