I'm just wondering why the landlords don't use letting agents?
Surely this takes away any problems if you use a reputable firm

Cost would be a factor.
Not really, people are either decent or they aren't ( both tenants and landlords) passing a credit check and going via an agent only really gives you an idea of how financially stable someone is not of the sort of people they are and receiving rent on time is only one factor to being a good tenant. We always vet them ourselves, and aside from the odd one or two have never really had a horror.
as if! letting agents just want to let the place at all costs
Also passing a credit check does not make you a good tenant either!!
After my house was repossessed I would have failed any credit check - if it had not been for a private landlord taking a chance on me I would have been homeless
Agree with kvalidir. We have only had one nightmare and that was through an agency. Getting the best tenant is key, much more important than getting the best income.
I used one years ago and they were a nightmare as were the tenants.
Previously I had rented to friends and had absolutely no problem.
It's a bit hit and miss.
you clearly aren't a landlord.....

I rang up XYZ ( huh made up name good huh?) letting agents and said Madame X has moved into near me - why didnt you get a ref from the Landlord ?

and they gave a poncey - data protection prevents us
and anyway how do you know?

because I am the ex-landlord and I would have told you I had chucked them out for not paying their rent but going on holiday with it. I have a CCJ against which I can send you if you like .....

he liked plenty - because they had paid the deposit but no rent .....

that just about sums it up Ric ror.....
as a landlord I tried it once and they didnt do anything - see above except take their fees

Only take Ex Service families, have only ever had one problem, worked out a way to resolve it and they are still Tenants.
Why pay an Agent to do what we can do just as well?
