Reminds me of toddlers with a bottle or sippy cup.

I don't buy it to take away.
Yeah it wouldn't bother me at all and we buy a lot of takeaway coffee and tea.
That must have been the programme I watched, Vulcan. I would have put them in recycling before that.

so everyone who puts them in recycling bins has got it wrong..
so paying more wouldn't bother you.
Shouldn't it be the case of getting the companies who do takeaways to make all their products recyclable.
Can't cups be made of plastic then, instead of coated cardboard/paper ?

My Council merrily collects all the plastic items, like yogurt pots, milk containers, etc, etc every week....aren't these recycled into new plastic containers ?
Mikey...no, it's as simple as that. Not all plastics are recyclable. Our council advises to not put the lids of milk bottles in the recycling and put them in general waste.
'bottles' is the wrong word. Plastic milk containers....

or whatever...
Takeaway coffee should be cheaper as it isn't needing the coffee shop to supply tables/chairs/etc. Disposable cups should be biodegradable in time; and made from sustainable resources. Dealing with them should be cheaper than having to wash chine mugs in hot water and washing up liquid. Few are going to carry around their own mug with them, office workers with a shop on site maybe. And some fanatics. I see this as another daft attempt to extract money from the public. It's amazing what those with the power to grab money find to achieve that.
CHINA
Like I typed !
Ummm...all this recycling is very confusing !

To answer the OP, if an extra penny were to be charged for every hot drink, my best guess is that it wouldn't effect the numbers sold one little bit.

Takeaway food and drink is here to stay and its not going away any time soon

Perhaps its time for the recycling companies to get their heads together on this one, and find a way to deal with this problem.
Look on the bright side OG; if people are willing to pay money into the public coffers for the priviledge of walking round with a cup of coffee, that's less money you have to pay into them.
There is a solution, it's mentioned near the end of the article, Martin Myerscough has invented a cup that is totally recyclable. However Starbucks said they were 'interested' and the other companies have said they're looking into it. In other words if it affects their profits too much they will ignore it.
there was a hugh fernley whittingstall program on about recyclable cups about a year ago - there is one place in the country that can recycle them i think
The only coffee I have (out of the house) is the "free" one at Waitrose....and I drink it whilst shopping there...

i don't think they are going to put up the prices by just a penny,
so makes your takeaway coffee almost as expensive as a small jar.
I thought the idea was to add 25p per cup. It wouldn't bother me. I never buy it. I too find the sippy cups slightly laughable.
"...bhg - some people are very short of time."

No. Some people are too busy fannying about with things like TwitFace, playing on X-Boxes and the like to ensure they feed and water themselves properly. It's their choice - they must do what they like with their time. But they are not short of it to the degree that they have to at and drink whilst walking along the street or on a bus. I would defy anybody to demonstrate that they do not have ten minutes in their day to sit down and drink a cup of coffee.
It's not something I buy, but if it were a part of my daily routine I'd happily pay the extra.
