I'm going to have my first tattoo on the outside edge of my upper thigh,about where my palm lands if I put my arms at my side. Can anyone tell me in real terms how painfull this is going to be,can you liken it to anything else that I would know so that I'm prepared please

I remember seeing a programme on TV about Stalking Cat. Most tragic a story about a chap who had completly ruined his face with tatoos.

Im just coming out the other side of a horrible life experience and the tattoo is symbolic of the strength I have gained and its on my thigh where nobody else can see it because its purely for me. When the darkness threatens to take over I can lay my hand on it without anyone knowing and remember Im better and stronger. I've given it alot of thought and just want to prepare for the pain. Also wonder about aftercare and how long it will be sore for because of going to work, as I said its for me and dont really want to tell anyone

Quite why people are giving their opinions on whether they like tatts or not is beyond me, when that's not what you asked for!

Will it be painful? Yes slightly, though in that area it won't be unbearable. gobble a couple of painkillers half or so before you go, you'll be fine.

aftercare? Shouldn't be to OTT, your tattooist should give you an aftercare leaflet, no one at work will know you've had it done unless you tell or show them it.

Mikey4444 I feel it would a be a good idea to look inside yourself and discover why you felt the need to make that statement about me and the condition of mental illness. I hope that you never experience it full on,your lack of understanding and acceptence would make it a true hell for you.
Events took me to my knees and now Im standing up again,I feel no shame.

Just-George....if you had said, right from the start, that you were using this tattoo as a way of helping yourself out of a rough time, I would probably not have made any comments at all. But you didn't.

Also, I am not the only one on here that has made anti-tattoo posts, so I am unsure why you decided to chide me, and not others !

For the record, I still think tattoos are silly and unsightly, but if you think they will help you, then carry on. I hope that you make a full recovery from whatever has bothered you.

It isn't painful, it's like scratching over a scratch. If you lightly pinch around your skin, you can see which places are more sensitive- not necessarily closest to the bone. It's usually covered for a while and then use something like bepanthen cream a few times a day while it heals.

Thanks pixie374 for the advice about afterwards too, its kind of you to think of that. I will have to go to work later in the day so my uniform trousers will be touching it, is it ok to put a dressing over it to stop the material catching on it and how long till the scabs finish coming away.

My sister has a tattoo on her boob, she thought it was ooh so sore getting it done, not put her off getting more the funny thing was, it hurt her because unknown to her at the time she was pregnant, she was in good form and never complained with any painful side effects, I don't know why did she put haemorrhoid cream on it. She holds down and good job, is head of her department and you only see her tattoo when her puppies come out - personally, don't care for them, everyone has their reasons and I'm glad you got over a trying time in your life. I think they wrap your new tatto in cling film or such like, so shouldn't be a problem.
Our daughter takes great strength, hope and solace in her three small tattoos and they are helping her cope with her mental issues (The word 'Believe' on her wrist, an artistic arrow pointing the way forward, not back to where she was, and a short saying on her ribs).
I hope you have really bounced back from your bad place and hope your tattoo works for you. (Personally I don't like them but each to their own).

I must say, I have quite a few tats and I know many people with tats, many of them female, but I don't know anybody that would have them removed. Mine are now very dated and somewhat faded as they are over 40 years old now, however I would not have any of them removed. I don't think face, hands or neck tattoos are a great idea though.

Huge thanks captain2 for sharing that. Its good to know Im not alone and this has and is working for others,my reason is like your daughters so I hope that if things get tough again just laying my hand discreetly on my thigh will keep me going in the right direction. I am bouncing back and I all good things to your daughter,I hope she keeps her bounce too
