Did anyone notice my absence? I did something stupid and the punishment included a month with no crosswords. Really tough! But it is over. Glad to be back.
Can someone explain this answer please? "Defile Conservative, no matter who fails to finish" The only word I can see is "canyon" and I see the c and anyon(e) but what does canyon have to do with defile?

C(onservative) anyon(e)

defile2
dɪˈfʌɪl/
noun
noun: defile; plural noun: defiles
ˈdiːfʌɪl/
1.
a steep-sided narrow gorge or passage (originally one requiring troops to march in single file).
"the twisting track wormed its way up a defile to level ground"
I'd better not ask what your misdemeanour was but don't do it again.
A whole month? Noooooooooo

Thank you. I didn't know it had that meaning. I was just thinking of spoil . Funny language, English, at times. How could a word have such totally different meanings? Though that's what makes crosswords such fun, I suppose.
I shan't do it again , Mamylynne I can assure you! I was stupid!

Sorry scorpiojo. I didn't see your second answer until now. Yes, a whole month. In fact it turned out to be five weeks! If nothing else, it showed me how much I like doing crosswords. And how much I missed them. But I don't need to tell you Masters and Mistresses of the great puzzle, do I?
You don't, Steven :o))
