Hi

Someone has taken to throwing their cigar butts into our garden . We collected about half a dozen of them last week and I've just picked another one up today.
Any ideas as to how we can deter this so-and-so without descending to Victor Meldrew levels?

Our garden has quite a high stone wall around it, then there is a wrought iron gate. Most of the butts were chucked over the wall, but today's find had been thrown through the gate.

Thanks, folks.

Could you make a sign, LadyA saying....We have filmed you throwing your cigar butts into our garden.......next week the photograph is going on Youtube?.....Just to worry the cigar butt thrower.......☺

Another possibility there, gness.

We've found another 3 butts, one of them smouldering, since I posted.

I'm shocked, really.
It's odd, LadyA, that someone would finish a cigar exactly at your property if he was passing....

Do you think it's someone who maybe smokes in secret.....banned from the house for instance....and lingers near your garden protected by your high wall?

That would give you a better chance of catching the culprit....and him a better chance of reading a notice you put up.......I'd go with the filming one....just to put the wind up him......x

Thanks again, Gness and everyone else who has answered.

No butts over the weekend...hurrah!

We're trying to keep a close eye on where the butts land so that we can perhaps get a timescale on the chucker.
I agree with Gness that it is probably someone who is smoking his cigar just the other side of my wall. Some of the butts seem quite large to me, though I am certainly not an expert on cigars....so maybe he is waiting for someone and chucks the cigar as soon as they arrive?
We're fairly near a couple of schools, but beside our wall is a funny place to wait for a kid.
Lordalex now has a stepladder installed beside the wall (inside) and has been talking about throwing buckets of water.....I recommended a bucket of confetti and a clown mask with a warning that it will be water next...but we'll have to catch him first.
Aren't some people just inconsiderate?
Mind you, perhaps some people would say that retired old fogies need something better to keep themselves occupied other than watching for butt chuckers......
Sigh.
Go for it, LadyA......wallpaper paste followed by the confetti!...☺
How's his Lordship? Evening Alex xx
Just a thought, ladyalex. Look out for smoke rising above your stone wall, cigars usually give off quite a bit of smoke.
When you see smoke rising above the wall you'll know where to aim the bucket full of whatever you you decide to fill it with ;-)
Cigar smokers should not be too hard to find, very few people smoke Cigars now. I can't say I actually know any cigar smokers now, where I knew 5 or 6 a few years back.
Just keep a lookout for anyone smoking a cigar in the street near you.

Thanks for all your support, folks.

We thought that the butt chucker had found somewhere else to chuck his butts, as there were none from Monday last week...until Friday when we found yet another one.
Bah!
Where he stands when he chucks them is at a place where it is hard for us to see. It is on the corner of 2 streets and we are wondering if he is smoking whilst waiting for a lift . Some of the butts are really quite large . (I am no expert, but they look big to me.) I've also had a squint at the brand ....they are all the same El Guajiro. Any cigar experts got any thoughts?
Or maybe I should stop all this Victor Meldrew/Miss Marple stuff, just pick up the butts and dispose of them and Get a Life.

Thanks for asking about lordalex, mazie. He's fine. Brain scan showed nothing......well, you know what I mean, nothing remarkable, no further action required.
:-))
Poor taste, they ain't Cuban, that's for sure. Canary Islands is where they are made.... Forget Castro and think Franco. Any of your neighbours professing to have gone to the ex-Spanish colonies, the ones that we let them keep.....
I'd be staking the corner out ladyalex, wouldn't think twice about handing them back either!

We are kind of doing that,Eleena, but it is quite an awkward spot to keep an eye on.....plus the weather up here in Angus hasn't been that great lately.
Cannot think of any neighbours who go to Spain.

Starting to wonder if it might be somebody's carer. (There are a lot of old fogies around here.)
My thinking is that there must be some reason for him to finish smoking when there is quite a lot of cigar still to smoke ....hence the possibility that he is waiting for a lift, so ditches the butt before getting into someone else's car. (How considerate.....hmmm). It would also explain why, when we found a still smouldering one, when we dashed round there was no one to be seen.
Sorry for assuming the chucker is a him....not many women smoke cigars.

Loved the link, Eleena.
Do a bit of Columbo, and check local shops to see who sells them.

If successful, quietly bung whose behind the counter £20.00, for the info of who is the ''Mystery Bung Flinger''.

Find out where he lives, knock the crap out of him, and set his house on fire! :-)
Could it be Nicola Sturgeon - after all, the anagram of her name is, 'On sane cigar lout' - though I would question the sane bit - in favour of insane.

Curiously enough, trt, I did have a quick look online to see if the supermarkets sold them....Sainsburys, Asda, Tescos and Morrisons do Not.
In fact, I could not find a UK stockist with a quick look.
Another idea, though.

DT...you leave Nicola alone. She hasn't done anything to you......
except smoke a cigar?
Hi, LadyA....if there's a verge nearby to plant a stick with a hook..... I'd gather a few, put them in a clear plastic bag and hang them on the hook where he must stand......x
Question Author
Thanks everyone.
No butts since I last posted...so either he's seen us watching and stopped or he's not waiting there any more.
I did put a heap of butts out on the pavement about where he must stand, but took them back in again when I realised that , although I wasn't as bad as him, I was littering....and it would be just my luck that some officious litter warden would fine me. (£80 on the spot fine for littering in my neck of the woods).
I'll keep on keeping an eye, but hopefully the problem has moved on to chuck his cigar butts into someone else's garden.
Thanks again, all.
