Personally I would recommend getting rid, and spending the money on taxis. Probably cheaper and more convenient. If you get to know your local cabbie, you might have enjoyable conversations on the journeys and help bringing the shopping in.

That's disappointing Baths. If you do ever get a helpful driver, ask his name and request him next time. A local small company should be happy to encourage regular custom. Perhaps even have a chat with the proprietor about what you need.
If you didn't have to pay to keep a car on the road you should be able to afford the taxis.
