Have a look at the link. A soundbar is a speaker in the shape of a bar.
It depends on your TV as to where it plugs in - some TVs have an optical output, others have an electrical socket like the one for headphones. Again, some TVs you can have the soundbar AND the speakers on; on other TVs it's one or the other. It might also have a separate on/off switch.
Just a note to consider.

We have a Samsung TV and a Samsung soundbar.

Unfortunately the TV remote control cannot be set up to control the soundbar, so we now have two remote controls.

The sound quality is a little better with the soundbar, particularly for music. However to be honest I don't think it makes a difference in being able to hear the TV, as opposed to just turning up the volume.
I'd agree with Hopkirk. We got a soundbar and you get that deep vibrating sound on films and music like you get in a cinema but it doesn't make normal speech any clearer or louder.

It might be worth looking into your TV menu settings to see if there's any options on the sound menu. Our LG lets you choose the sound for the set being wall mounted or on a stand and other settings for different types of sound ie, musoc/speech. By playing around you might find that you can set your TV to be better for you to hear.
