Never agreed with his politics but compared to today's lot he stands well out as a conviction politician.

Was he still an MP? Another by-election?
Yes YMB he was a sitting MP at the time of his death and also held the title of Father of the House. Therefore a by-election will be called and a new Father of the House appointed.
A Jewish MP who was never frighten to criticise the atrocities committed by the Israeli Government. He is a loss to the House.

His constituency has many muslims and blacks so it will be funny if the serial liar Nuttall stands in the byelection.
I think that the new "Father of the House" is Kenneth Clarke.
He will be missed as an adviser and his depth of experience.
Ken Clarke is the new Father - the title automatically passes to the oldest serving MP.
Apologies - The Father Of The House is not the oldest sitting MP, it is the MP who is not a minister who has the longest unbroken record of service - this logically indicates the oldest MP, but that is not the criteria.
Ken Clarke - Father of the House.

That will annoy the Eurosceptics.
// this logically indicates the oldest MP, but that is not the criterion. //

no it doesnt logically indicate the oldest MP

if in the coming by ellection a walk in aged 96 stands and is elected
he might be the oldest MP but would not be ( logically probably would never be ) the Father of the House [ yeah OK if Daesh machine gunned over 600 mps then he might be in the running ]

Also used to leak whole time to Private Eye
Dennis Skinner was elected the same year as Clarke. I believe it depends upon the order in which MPs take the oath.
RIP Sir Gerald
There will not be much interest in this by-election. If Labour should put up a pig it will still walk it in that constituency.
I thought Kaufman had a bit of a cloud hovering over him?
You are correct, Sam.

//One of the last of Wilson's "Kitchen Cabinet" still left. //
Eh? He is dead, aged 86, and the Title says so!

You are quite correct - my logic is at fault, thanks for the correction.
