is anyone else aggravated when you latch onto a new series only to find that its cancelled after one season or without any kind of an ending. I know the US ratings are cluttered with banal humour but its a shame anything even remotely intelligent is rated only in that way. If the channels are going to show these programmes maybe they could preface the show with a warning its already cancelled.

Yes it does annoy me it has now got so bad that if I start to watch a series and find out a couple of episodes in that it has been cancelled - I give up straight away.
I get annoyed when a series finishes with a lot of loose ends and carries on and on and on long past its best by date.
Let a series have a beginning, a middle and an end. A second series should have a fresh plot
Also very annoying is when a channel starts to show a series, then drops it. I watched all of Six Feet Under, then the last season wasn't shown. Same with Mad Men on BBC 2, and Dexter disappeared from ITV.
The (U.S.) commissioning departments pay very close attention to the ratings because of the advertising revenue.
An American series last for 26 weeks, often broken up into two lots of 13 episodes. If the money-figures don't stack up it'll often end after week 13 leaving those who were enjoying it deeply dissatisfied - i.e. FlashForward.
Conversely, a storyline which ought to be resolvable in 13/26 weeks, will be stretched beyond its natural limits when it proves to be a hit with the viewers leading to tedious, unbelievable twists, etc. which are all to do with chasing the advertising dollar rather than providing the viewer with an enjoyable experience - Lost, Heroes, etc.

I agree entirely with JTH so many good series wasted and others dragged out beyond rhyme or reason. I personally hate soaps but how can they run some of them for 30 years plus......
they left us wondering when they cancelled home fires x
I was disappointed with the ending of Home Fires, also Jerricho
Yes, I really liked Home Fires.
I did this with a series a few years ago called Alcatraz starring Sam Neill.....It showed 13 episodes and then was duly cancelled with little explanation, with no conclusion......Boy, I was miffed!
