Full time worker being told less work available so cutting down to 4 day week. Some people got told on Monday and son told today as 2 days holiday start week. Workers have to give decision by this Friday if they want to go ahead. Usually 8 hours day Mon to Thurs and 7 on Friday . Boss saying 4 days they have to work is Tues to Fri as pay one hour and one day less. No saying if they agree to 4 days working week that boss doesn't cut to 3 or 2 days future. Also wanting works to trigger redundancy so they don't have to pay notice as well redundancy money. What rights if any? Thanks.

Your son should speak to an advisor at ACAS for advice. The ACAS helpline number is 0300 123 1100. It is available Monday 8am-8pm, Tuesday 8am-6pm, Wednesday to Thursday 8am-8pm and Friday 8am-6pm. http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1410

I think your sone should ring ACAS
it seems obvious tht during lay off they are entitled to (some) pay
however you say that the employer has asked them to 'agree' to lay off. He doesnt have to and this implies ( we dont know ) that that includes lay off with no pay

so unless he wants to starve - he should ring ACAS

Firm went ahead and cut work force to a minimum though son still working 4 days and so far firm are still searching and getting some new contracts. Thanks for advice.
I don't understand the bit about avoiding notice payments.
What is the notice period your son is on (in terms of ow much notice they have to give him)- if it's 4 weeks they have to give 4 weeks' notice of the change or pay him the shortfall for 4 weeks

Unsure if he got 4 weeks notice before reduction to 4 day week but will find out.
