The answer lies not in paying sweatshop wages, but in working out why some manufacturers an make garments paying the legal wages and still make a profit.
Perhaps the British public also need to ask themselves how garments are so cheap on the high street ? Maybe their expectations need to managed a little better.

Britain lost its ability to manufacture goods cheaply a long time ago, and lost it really as a result of workers quite rightly not accepting sweatshop conditions. We are still good at top-end stuff where cost isn’t that important, but the only way we compete at the lower end is by paying workers too little. I quite understand how many want to cut immigration, up wages, and get more Brits in employment, but of course most Brits wouldn’t work for the money being offered now, and upping wages could result in less manufacturing and fewer jobs.

It's very simple, - you just have to understand the differing ratios of material/labour/overhead costs according to the quality (and hence the sale price) of different garments.
Less expensive clothing is now largely imported from countries where labour costs are much lower and UK companies paying the legal minimum wage cannot compete.
The companies that are being reported on are not geared up to manufacture higher quality(priced) garments so to compete in their chosen market they have to resort to illegal practices.

Yes, thanks Talbot....I noticed that earlier today.
I have now watched the "Dispatches" program, and its even worse that we thought.
Not just the usual shysters, paying £3 an hour, being filmed paying £3 a hours and then saying that they aren't.
Not just the clothing firms, sub-contacting out to the shysters, and being terribly shocked when CH4 presented the evidence.
But factories where there is totally inadequate fire escape protection !
Somebody queried earlier, the ethics of putting these firms out of business and perhaps causing unemployment as a result ( not you )
But who would now defend these companies ? Its up to the clothing firms to make sure that the supply chain is safe and not corrupt, and if that means paying more frequent visits, then that is what they should do.

To all intents and purposes these people in these factories do no exist, The factories exist because slave labour is freely available through illegal immigrants and legal immigrants coming from impoverished countries within the great European Union.
