Ninefingers - //Until trump puts his very wealthy Butt in the chair in the oval office he'll say what he like, once he gets there, expect the rhetoric to differ. //

My point exactly.

But it would have been a good sign if DT had already started learning the lessons of what he can say where and to whom now, rather than it being forced on him at midnight-plus-one on the day he takes office.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in those first few weeks, and be paid a dollar for every time someone says a variation of 'Mr President, you can't say / do that ...'.

I'd be a rich man by the weekend!!
I think we are just going to have to accept that this will be a president who opens his mouth first and thinks (if at all) a bit later.
Given that his Defense Chief is of the opinion that if NATO did not exist it would be necessary to invent it (and quick) ....

What was it someone said about Trump: his enemies take him literally but not seriously, and his cheerleaders take him seriously but not literally.
All we have had from him so far of course, necessarily, is words. There has not been a lot else to go on, but he contradicts himself at every turn.
It'll all be fine I'm sure :-)
Yet another large hole that Trump has fallen into.....all this and he isn't even President yet....god help us all over the next 4 years ( or less )
NATO is obsolete.
The Russians have a traitor spy in the Oval Office so they don't really need to send any planes.
Gromit, ever thought of extending your talents to writing political fiction?
naomi24

Good idea.
I can't decide if it will be a comedy or a tragedy though.

My main character will be President Fartov.
Got to be comedy, Gromit.
...and Vice-President Vukov?
Pence is the Vice President.
So my VP would be Mr Ruble. Barney Ruble.
Gromit, you see, your characters are evolving nicely already ;-)
// Gromit, ever thought of extending your talents to writing political fiction?//

it is not political fiction but political fact ! ( Gromit would say )

we will have to wait and see
will he go on as he has begun - actually I think he will / will try

tell ya waaaat ! he's gonna surprise at least half of us
ya know that MH flight - well I m gonna find it !
i seen those mamas and those papas cryin for deir children and I tell ya ......
// My main character will be President Fartov.//

and zee Bond character - Irina Legova
or perhaps ze crazy jihadi who like shooting and also good time
mustapha legova
( legova is feminine but what the hell - we are all going there )
Divebuddy at 15:45 Mon. is right-on. Nothing more needs to be said.
now now no need to insult SB, I'm sure he is not 'right-on'!

Seriously though Trump has a point. NATO is well past it's sell by date, time for something more befitting the 21st Century.
Tell the people of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, that NATO is not needed any more.
And while you're at it, remind Trump which alliance helped the US in its war in Afghanistan ...

NATO needs to adapt to the new threats and new types of warfare posed and employed by Russia certainly.
I guess if you asked people on here who, out of Winston Churchill and Lord Halifax, they'd have backed in 1939 in the face of Nazi Germany's threats, most if not all would say "Churchill"
And yet here we are calmly adopting the Lord Halifax position vis a vis a latter day fascist dictator.
