Had my grandaughter staying overnight as her parents are away to a funeral. Did the school run and picked up two of her friends on the way. Total silence in the car as they were all on their mobiles!! I fear for the art of conversation.

The conversation is going on, but you can't hear it.
And that's the silver lining, Hopkirk. :)
It's not just children Maggie, I've seen abers " chat" to each other on here and they are in the same room . LOL .
The art of conversation will never die.
The upside is that i can chat to my family abroad and my sisters in other parts of the UK as though they were in the room.
Many ABers probably have for more in depth conversations on here than they do in real life.
As Anne says, Maggie.....not just children......

In the past week I've had a woman and a middle aged man walk across the road in front of my car without stopping or looking......phones stuck to their ears.....their conversations must have been so important that they risked death......☻
My boss (cousin) is always on the phone. He's popped round ours, sat down while on his phone, and left after 1/2 hour with barely saying a word to us.

My OH always looks a bit baffled.

Best answer for anne lol!
Total silence - wonderful!!!!!
Which ABers are in the same room? - that sounds interesting...
...and in which particular room??
We watched a middle aged couple in Wetherspoons having a meal together. Each had an I-pad and were obviously playing separate games. Not once throughout the whole meal did they raise their heads to look at each other and were spooning their (what looked like) pasta in their mouths with one hand while tapping away with the other! It was quite amusing watching them ... but a sad sign of the times ..... ;)
Just how does the behaviour of others really impact your pleasure? I wouldn't tinker away on my iPad or phone when out with my husband or friends but I would at judge those at other tables.
^^^wouldn't judge"
Would anyone blink an eyelid if someone was sitting at the table reading the newspaper?
You're making a good fist of judging folk on AB these days, Eccles.
I wasn't "judging" in any way Eccles I just thought it sad they were out together but didn't seem to be enjoying each others company ......but it was enjoyable "people-watching!"

PS You were quick to judge me!! ;)
Great minds think alike Gness!
Ho hum.
