Hi. I was just wondering if anyone knew about headstones. I can get a lovely one online but im not sure how i would go about erecting it. Ive phoned the council and they were no help. Just said the place i was getting it from had to have the right qualification. The stone im looking at is 8kg in weght. Can i just take it and put it on the grave or does it need to be fixed in place. I know with the cross we have now we just put it into the ground. Many thanks

Even if you're ordering online, a decent supplier should include 'fixing in the cemetery' in the price, as this one does:

Do you already have a base for the cross?
I think Mitsy means the cross they put there before the headstone is erected.
Me, ummmm? I just meant that the replacement would need a base, it couldn't just be put into the ground :)

Have you tried a local monumental mason, mitsy?
I would say going through a mason would be much less hassle in the long run.

The cross was put into the ground but would like to put a stone there. The company doesnt erect them. They only supply the stone as they are not local to me. I havent tried the local one. Would they erect the stone even if i haven't bought it from them?

I have to be honest i cant afford the prices to get a stone from the stone masons but would like something there as the cross is quite old
They probably would but they will charge you.

Have you tried going to them direct?
Sorry...crossed posts.

How about ringing them and asking how the stone is kept in place.
I don't see why not, they did for me.
..and shop around, mitsy..
Have you tried ringing the cemetery directly? They're usually very helpful.

Unable to phone the cemetery as you have to phone a central places that covers the cemetery but they were of no use when i asked. Thanks for all your help.
you need to have a concrete base laid first..and permission from cemetery
I have never heard of anybody buying a gravestone on the 'net !

Why don't you try a local Monumental Mason ?
Mikey...she's said she can't afford it.
cemetery may know of someone who will erect a delivered headstone...or contact the council where the grave is and make enquiries there...
Sorry Litzy....I missed the bit where you said you couldn't afford to use a MM....my apologies !

I think you will find that the Local Council won't allow just anybody to turn up and erect a stone. Contact them and they will provide you with a list of local approved contractors.
